About Ajax South:
What was once a small town surrounded by agricultural areas, Ajax is now one of the fastest growing areas in Ontario. Part of the Durham region, and located in the eastern part of the Greater Toronto Area, Ajax is home to many young families and professionals looking to find affordable houses close to the waterfront, away from big city life.
Originally a popular cottage destination for the upper class, South Ajax’s cottages have been replaced with modern detached homes located on large lots. A nature lover’s paradise, residents of South Ajax are only 5-10 minutes from the town’s wonderful waterfront trails and parks along Lake Ontario. As the neighbourhood by the lake, South Ajax is the perfect combination of outdoor adventure and small town feel.
Born during the Second World War, the Town of Ajax is named after the HMS Ajax, one of three Royal Navy Cruisers that served with distinction during WW11
Throughout the town, the legacy lives on as each new street is named after the officers and crew members of the Ajax, Exeter, and Achilles ships that were key players in the Battle of River Plate
In 1941, Defense Industries Limited established a munitions plant in Ajax, which employed 9,000 workers at its peak and of which the town grew around
Post war, the University of Toronto leased the D.I.L plant to house engineering students and many of the buildings were converted into classrooms and residences
Officially incorporated as a town in 1955, Ajax became a planned modern community
In 1973, the Town of Ajax’s boundaries were enlarged, and it grew more than 5 and ½ times in size
Meet the Neighbours
With many families with school aged children, the South Ajax neighbourhood is extremely family-friendly. With most streets only a 5-10 minute walk to the waterfront, there is an endless supply of trails, parks, and outdoor activities to enjoy, as well as family-friendly festivals and events.
Maintaining its Small Town Roots
For those seeking Ajax’s small town feel, the older established areas of South Ajax typically consist of bungalows, side splits and back splits located on large lots. South Ajax new builds are typically more modern 2-3 storey, 4 bedroom detached homes with attached single or double car garages.
Don’t Miss Out!
Far enough away from the big city, but close enough to commute, it remains popular with families and professionals looking for more reasonably priced lakeside living. With a new generation settling down, homes tend to sell quickly.
