About The Junction:

Describing it as “Toronto’s emerging stylish neighbourhood full of bars, live music and coffee shops” – The New York Times listed The Junction as one of ‘The 52 Places to Go in 2016’. Born of industrial roots, this neighbourhood now attracts young families, artists, entrepreneurs and urban professionals.

Its strong sense of pride and history, combined with the beautiful main street shopping district, cherished local schools, parks, and library, create a vibrant community while still remaining affordable.

History of The Junction:

  • Originally established by our first nations people as a trail network to encampments and crop areas.
  • In 1879 Railway tracks were laid to follow the trails, fostering the growth of industry including cattle stockyards, furniture, ploughs and wire manufacturers.
  • Founded in 1884 as a Village, the Junction grew into a town, and then it became the City of West Toronto before amalgamation with the City of Toronto in 1909.
  • During the period of 1907 – 1913 four theatres opened on Dundas Street featuring silent movies, Vaudeville stars, and local entertainers.
  • Hotels and taverns sprung up to accommodate the bevy of male workers. By 1904, their behaviour was compared to that of the “wild west”, leading the residents to vote for banning the sale of alcohol until 1998.
  • It wasn’t until 2000 that the first drink was poured east of Keele Street at Shox’s.
  • Resident Minerva Reid was one of the first female doctors in Ontario, as well as founder and chief surgeon of Women’s College Hospital.

Downtown Without the Attitude

The Junction’s funky style, laid-back vibe fosters a close community that is warm and welcoming.

Don’t Miss Out!

Far enough away from downtown to keep prices reasonable, but close enough that it remains popular with artists, families and professionals.
