History of Bloor West Village:

  • In the 1850’s, the area was the property of Lieutenant Colonel William Smith Durie, the first commanding officer of the Queens Own Rifles
  • The present day neighbourhood began to be developed in 1909 when this district became part of the City of Toronto
  • When the Bloor West Subway line was completed in 1968, competition to local business from downtown led to the development of the Bloor West Village Business Improvement Association (BIA)
  • As the world’s first BIA, this not-for-profit association focuses on local improvements and stimulating local businesses
  • Today there are 77 BIA’s in Toronto and the idea is now used globally
  • In 2OO5, a fountain was dedicated to Alex Ling, the BIA leader, and founder
