History of Bloor West Village:

In the 1850’s, the area was the property of Lieutenant Colonel William Smith Durie, the first commanding officer of the Queens Own Rifles
The present day neighbourhood began to be developed in 1909 when this district became part of the City of Toronto
When the Bloor West Subway line was completed in 1968, competition to local business from downtown led to the development of the Bloor West Village Business Improvement Association (BIA)
As the world’s first BIA, this not-for-profit association focuses on local improvements and stimulating local businesses
Today there are 77 BIA’s in Toronto and the idea is now used globally
In 2OO5, a fountain was dedicated to Alex Ling, the BIA leader, and founder
