Roncesvalles Village and High Park

A Village Within A City

Highlights:

A Village Within A City:

Roncesvalles Village, known fondly as “Roncy,” is a family-friendly, west-end neighbourhood that combines European ambience with a small-town feel. The wide side walks are lined with unique bookstores, boutique clothing shops, independent restaurants, and vestiges of the once-dominate Polish community.

Daily shopping is easy with fruit and flower markets populating the corners, while the 101-year-old Revue Cinema creates a nostalgic feel – all within in short distance of the bustling downtown scene and the city’s largest public park.

History of Roncesvalles Village and High Park:

  • Named after the 1813 Battle of Roncesvalles by Colonel Walter O’Hara, who was injured while fighting
  • He built a home called West Lodge after an old family estate in Ireland. It was acquired by the city in 1950 as an apartment building, which still bears the name today
  • Edward Alonzo Boyd, the dashing member of the notorious bank-robbing Boyd Gang, lived in a rooming house on Wright Avenue. In the basement, you can still see the holes from their BB Gun target practice
  • Although Sorauren was meant to be the main street, Roncesvalles grew in popularity in the early 1900’s when the streetcar was introduced. That’s why Sorauren’s so expansive. It had to be wide enough for the milk delivery trucks to turn around
  • A post-WW2 influx of Polish immigrants gave the area its unique culture, which it proudly maintains today
